As part of apprenticeship week 2017, Housing Apprentice Jake Cane said a few words on his experience and the opportunities of being an apprentice here at Humankind Housing, read what Jake had to say below:
I do a business admin apprenticeship and study a level 2 NVQ. I am lined up to go on and start my level 3 within the next few weeks. I started my apprenticeship late in August and it runs for 12 months.
I hope to secure permanent employment with Humankind Housing as an administrator and further my knowledge in the housing sector. I aim to pursue a long term career in this field and with Humankind’s housing team, possibly even doing various roles in years to come.
In my apprenticeship, I am the first point of contact for both internal and external calls and always look to deal with any issues myself the best I can. It is my responsibility to keep data up to date on file and on the database and upload documents onto the housing drive. I also work on the website to upload information.
I thoroughly enjoy my role with Humankind Housing and this is down to a number of things. Firstly being the environment I work in. I feel my colleagues are very supportive of my work and always help me when needed and take a lot of time to help me progress. I am also constantly busy and the field of work is very interesting and different challenges are faced every day which I must overcome or help others overcome.
I feel a big part of the team here. Again this is down to the environment I work in. The mood is always positive and I am always involved in tasks and set new challenges. This shows my colleagues hold great trust in me and believe in my ability.
An apprenticeship with Humankind Housing is something I would strongly recommend to anyone because of the positive atmosphere round the company and the time invested in apprentices. Since joining I have gained a great knowledge of the service and it is a real eye opener to the difficulties some people face day in day out, as well as undergoing several training courses and becoming a qualified first aider. I will also go on to gain level 2 and 3 qualifications in Business Admin.
What did Jake’s line manager, Mark Spooner, have to say?
“Jake supports the Housing Officers, the Team Leader, the Premises & Facilities Coordinator and myself to complete our duties day to day.
“Jake is the main point of contact for internal and external persons when contacting Humankind Housing, which include tenants, landlords and referral agencies i.e. local authorities.
“Jake is a great addition to the team and is well liked by all and has a good sense of humour. Jake is a willing worker and has learned quickly and taken on more responsibility than we expected at this stage.
“On completion of Jake’s apprenticeship we will hopefully be in a position to offer him a permanent role as the Junior Administrator within the team which will then give Jake the opportunity to continue his development and progress further within Humankind Housing.”
